For most of my 20+ year career, I've struggled with the concept of “professional identity”. Not because I didn't know who I was, but because I’ve often felt there was an expectation to look and behave a certain way to be taken seriously. Sometimes, the price of being different or unique is being treated as though you have something to prove.
Perception is an interesting thing…
I've always worn a lot of black. Admittedly, my style leans a little unconventional. I don't fit the mold of what most people picture when they think of a "professional". Over the years, I've had people make assumptions about me before we've even had a conversation and that's always fascinated me.
Why are we so quick to define professionalism by appearance?
Somewhere along the way, we decided professionalism looked like tailored suits, neutral colours, polished hairstyles, and fitting neatly into a particular box. But not everyone fits into this mold and how could you do your best work when you don’t feel like yourself?
We began confusing conformity with competence and skill. But none of those things tell you whether someone is ethical. None of them tell you whether they'll advocate for their clients when things get difficult or do the right thing. None of them tell you whether they'll own their mistakes, communicate honestly, solve problems under pressure, or genuinely care about the people they've committed to serving. That's what professionalism is. It's integrity, accountability, and respect. It's doing the right thing, especially when no one is watching. Those are the values I've built my career on. Not everyone has always understood that, but I’ve never believed I needed to become someone else to prove my worth. Instead, I focused on becoming exceptional at what I do. The results speak for themselves.
I've always believed this industry is about much more than timelines, sales, contracts, and logistics. Events are deeply personal. Whether I'm planning a wedding or a trade show, I'm working with people during moments that matter. That means relationships matter. Authenticity matters. Trust matters.
I've never wanted clients to work with a polished version of me that exists only in meetings or on social media. I want them to know the real person they're inviting into one of the most important moments of their lives or businesses. Because that's where trust comes from.
Being professional doesn't require you to hide your personality.
It doesn't require you to tone yourself down or dress like everyone else. It doesn't require you to abandon what makes you unique. It requires you to deliver on your promises. To communicate with honesty. To act with integrity. To care. The rest is simply personal style. Some of the greatest, most talented, reliable, and genuinely exceptional professionals I’ve worked alongside have expressed themselves through tattoos, piercings, unconventional style, or simply by refusing to fit a traditional mold. I love that. We have a deeply personable relationship which means trust.
So, if you've ever felt like you needed to change who you are to be taken seriously, consider this your reminder that your individuality isn't something to overcome—it's something to own.
Be unapologetically yourself.
Wear what feels like you. Express yourself in ways that make you confident. Then back it up with hard work, kindness, integrity, and excellence. Those qualities will always outlast first impressions. You’ll never catch me in a 3-piece suit, but you will catch me in my own version of it – all black everything, Jordans, and chains.
After more than two decades in this industry, I've learned something important: the people who value authenticity become the clients you genuinely enjoy working with. They're not looking for someone who fits a stereotype. They're looking for someone personable; someone they can trust. And that's exactly the kind of professional I've always chosen to be.
That’s the kind of professional you’ll find at KDG Event Management: someone who shows up as their authentic self, treats people with respect, and brings their absolute best to every event.
